July 31, 2021 - went running this morning on an old track nearby! I feel that the picture doesn’t do the mountains in the background justice
July 29, 2021 - saw this artwork painted on a fence while walking around Bishkek. I don’t know what it is for (there was some text on the fence that is not in the picture), but I thought it was pretty
July 28, 2021 - a package of qurut (курут) that I saw in a supermarket. I had this snack before while I was in China, courtesy of a couple of international students. It tasted kind of milky and chalky to me. It’s not my favorite, but I do want to try it again. I just thought this particular qurut was interesting because it seems odd to buy only one ball of qurut by itself as opposed to multiple at a time (you can even see in the picture that there is another package of qurut with multiple inside). For more about qurut, take a look at this Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kash…
July 27, 2021 - A collection of local drinks produced by the Kyrgyz company Shoro (Шоро) (you can go to this link on the company’s website for more detailed information on the drinks: www.shoro.kg/en/produc…
During the summer in Bishkek, pedestrians can purchase a cup to go from streetside Shoro vendors (I don’t know if the vendors always offer all varieties of Shoro drinks—I’ve mainly seen Maksym (Максым), Chalap (Чалап) and Kvass (Квас) for sale). When I first arrived, I was so thirsty that I bought a cup of Maksym, which I’ve heard is the most popular Shoro drink.
At first glance, I thought maybe it might be a coffee drink 😅 It’s not. It’s grainy and a little sour…I’m not sure how else to explain it. I would be okay if I never drank it again, but I still want to try the others!
