- Next week is the last week of school 😮
- My boyfriend will come to my regional center town on Saturday. I’m excited to see him! And to be able to get some things from Bishkek.. 🤫
- My 2nd coteacher told me on Friday that she will go to Bishkek on Monday and Tuesday, so we won’t have our 9A, 9B and 5V classes on those days. I’m particularly disappointed about our 9th classes because we only teach them on Monday and Tuesday. This means that we already gave them their last lessons of the school year, even though I didn’t know that at the time 🙁
- Host grandpa’s birthday was on Wednesday, May 15, but we ate cake on Tuesday, May 14.
- Tuesday’s dinner was beshbarmak with beef. Wednesday’s dinner was beshbarmak with sheep. Yesterday (Saturday, May 18) we had sheep (I think) beshbarmak AGAIN. That brings the beshbarmak counter of the week to 3!!!! 😥
- For some reason, an aunt and two boy cousins (4 and 2 ½) came to our house on Wednesday or Thursday? And stayed until today (Sunday). My host parents weren’t around much during that time, but I don’t know what they were busy with. Maybe planting potatoes in a field farther from our house?
- went to a shop near my school for the first time, and turns out it is owned by the family of one of my 8th class students
- went for a run for the first time in my new New Balance shoes with insoles from an orthopedist in Bishkek because I have old person feet 🙃
- got my Uzbek e-visa after being worried about when/if I would receive it, due to the application system going down right after I completed my application!!

weeknotes 001 / May 4, 2024
- May 1 (Wednesday) was Labor Day, so we had no school on this day, Thursday or Friday
- On Thursday, we visited host family friends who live in the mountains. I was able to climb small hills around their house, and it was great! I really needed the time in nature and the physical exertion. May have overdone it though - I ended up walking 30,000 steps on this day. It’s Saturday as I write this, and my body still feels like it’s recovering. I’ve also had a hard time waking up early since then
- On Friday, we were supposed to have a local Manas event, but because of an accident that happened at a Manas event in Jalal-Abad oblast, ours was canceled. I’m not sure if it was delayed or canceled indefinitely. I’m secretly grateful that it didn’t happen, but of course I’m not happy with the circumstances that caused the cancellation
- So Friday ended up being a mostly chill day at home. I gave my host sister her birthday gift and we ate cake. After that, we went to a field that my host family has which is next to one of the mosques in town. We gathered trash and dead brush together in piles to burn, and we burned one large pile. This is in preparation for planting this year’s potatoes
- My boyfriend and I will be going to Uzbekistan this summer, in late June! I’m simultaneously excited and worried. Excited because we will go to cities in Uzbekistan that I’ve never visited before (Bukhara and Urgench), we will ride an overnight train, we will attend an Uzbek wedding (which is one of the main reasons why we’re going to Uzbekistan), and I’m hoping that this time around I can actually communicate more with people (even though we will have an Uzbek speaking friend with us). Worried because it will probably be extremely hot
